Shabla is located about 25 km from the border with Romania and 80 km from Varna. The town itself / declared a town in 1969 / is not located on sea territory, but this does not prevent us from connecting it with the oldest lighthouse operating on the Balkan Peninsula.
In the past, the city of Shabla was a territory where an ancient Thracian settlement existed, and later a Roman city called Caria. On the territory of Shabla is the oldest lighthouse on the Balkan Peninsula, and according to some sources in Europe. There are many oil rigs around the Shabla lighthouse from which hot mineral water with high sulfur content flows.
There are many sunken ships and submarines from the Second World War in the sea around Shabla. This makes Shabla a preferred destination for underwater tourism. The area is a favorite place for ornithologists. Next to Shabla there is a yacht club, from which the annual yacht regatta on the Black Sea coast starts.
About 3 km from Shabla is a protected area Shabla Lake, declared as such in 1979. Under this name are united two natural coastal lakes in Shabla and Ezerets, connected by an artificial canal. They themselves are separated from the sea by a sandy strip 30-50 meters wide. The place is among the most important wetlands in Bulgaria along with Lake Durankulak. Here are plants that can rarely be seen elsewhere. They are especially important for the bird fauna.
