At sea in Shabla? Are the beautiful beaches in Bulgaria a mirage? It is already the end of August and we only have a few days off for the sea. The place we are looking for must meet two mandatory conditions:

 1) to be north of Balchik, as we like more secluded beaches, and 2) to have a private bathroom with hot water, because we do not want so much wild vacation. We choose Shabla and leave without prior preparation, unless I count the browsing of several tourist forums. We leave a slightly open door - if we do not like the place, we are ready to continue further north - to Ezerets, Krapets or Durankulak.

On the way to the sea we stop at the OMV gas station, near Shumen, for another espresso and surprisingly decide to be reasonable. We start searching in Google for free accommodation in Shabla and call the phones. We are lucky because we find a place where the conditions meet our wishes (there is even air conditioning), and we make a reservation.

Why am I telling all this? Because our guest house is called Mirage. All the way there we are busy with the mystery of what exactly lies behind this name - an honest warning or a sentimental longing for impossible things. Is the beautiful beach of Shabla a mirage? Is there such a sea in Bulgaria - with sand dunes and deserted beaches?

Whatever you have heard or read about the sea near Shabla, a surprise awaits you on the spot, for which you cannot be prepared. I say it straight - it's an unpretentious vacation, but the important things are real: a huge beach with dunes and clear water. There are also unusual extras such as healing mud and semi-organized beach volleyball groups. One can notice that the base is outdated, the bungalows are abandoned and grass grows through the asphalt, but this is what keeps all fans of mass tourism away from Shabla.
